Dandruff Be Gone: How to Manage Hair Dandruff

Posted by Vien

Dandruff is unsightly and uncomfortable, but it's not hard to manage. And you don't have to spend a ton of money on over-the-counter shampoos and conditioners to get rid of it. In fact, there are plenty of natural remedies that can help get rid of dandruff and keep it from coming back. So if your scalp is itchy or getting flaky, read on for some tips on how to treat dandruff at home!

Dandruff is often easy to manage, and there are some simple steps you can take to get rid of it.
Dandruff is a common skin condition, but it doesn't need to be embarrassing. It can be hard to know whether dandruff has a more serious cause, such as psoriasis or eczema. But if you're experiencing the typical flakes on your scalp and they don't seem to be getting worse, then dandruff is likely what's causing them.

Dandruff isn't contagious or permanent; it's just part of having oily hair and skin that get irritated by different things—like shampoo and stress. Dandruff also tends to flare up during wintertime because the air inside your home tends to dry out skin faster than you'd like in the dry heat of an A/C unit.

Create a hair routine that works for you.

The most important part of managing dandruff is creating a hair routine that works for you. You may have to experiment with your routine to see what works, but here are some general tips:

Wash your hair every day or every other day. It’s okay if you have greasy roots, as long as they aren’t oilier than the rest of your scalp and aren’t clumping together in large flakes. The more often you wash your hair, however, the drier it will be—so if this is an issue for you (or if you don't want to dry out all those moisturizers), stick with just a few times per week.

Use conditioner after washing your hair so that it doesn't get too dry from being rinsed off repeatedly over time (and then again when someone else uses water). If possible, try not using shampoo at all so that there's less friction between strands during brushing sessions (which also means less brushing).

Finding a good dandruff shampoo.
Once you’ve figured out what causes your dandruff and how to treat it at home, finding a good dandruff shampoo can be the next step in your journey to get rid of scalp flakes.

When choosing a dandruff shampoo, look for ingredients like tea tree oil, zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, or selenium sulfide. These are all proven ingredients that will help fight off flaky skin and keep it from coming back.

It's also important to note that some shampoos marketed as "for dandruff" may not actually be effective against your specific problem; if you want the best results with minimal irritation or dryness (if any), make sure the product is labeled specifically for treating scalp issues like seborrheic dermatitis (aka scaly skin).

To avoid making things worse by using a medicated product on an irritated scalp or one with an inappropriate pH level (which can lead to further irritation), look for products that are labeled “pH 5-6”—the natural pH level of healthy scalps.

Products you may want to check and try:

A highly effective medicated shampoo that deeply soothes the scalp to prevent the recurrence of itching, flaking, and scaling associated with dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis with a concentrated dose of Zinc Pyrithione, an ingredient proven to win the fight against both scalp conditions
*How to use: Wet skin or hair thoroughly, then pour a generous dollop of shampoo into palm; rub hands together to create a light lather, and massage into skin or scalp, working your way down to ends of hair. Leave on for up to 2 minutes and rinse thoroughly. For maximum results, use 2-3 times per week and alternate with DCL SA Scalp Therapy Shampoo.

Redken's Scalp Relief Dandruff Control Shampoo is a dandruff shampoo that has been dermatologist tested. This specialized hair treatment helps fight and control dandruff while leaving hair silky smooth.
*How to use: Apply to wet or dry hair. Leave on for 5 minutes. Wet hair and rinse, can be used daily. For even more intensive treatment, apply Dandruff Control Shampoo to the scalp of dry hair. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, then lather and rinse thoroughly.

Fights the fungus that causes dandruff while calming the scalp and keeping hair strong and resilient.

Don't forget to use conditioner.
You may have heard that conditioner can help with dandruff, but did you know it's also good for your hair in general? Conditioner is an important part of your hair care routine. Conditioners are designed to keep your hair smooth and soft, which helps prevent it from getting too dry or frizzy. It can also help reduce the amount of oil on the surface of your scalp, which may be another factor in dandruff development.

Products you may want to check and try:

Soothe your red and irritated scalp with the help of this effective Sachajuan Scalp Conditioner. Scalp Conditioner is a creamy formula that's enriched with dandruff-fighting ingredients that provide soothing relief.
*How to use: Massage into washed scalp and hair, comb through gently. Allow 1 to 5 minutes to work in. Rinse well.

Soothe and nurture your sensitive scalp with this 100% vegan, calming conditioner that offers your much-needed daily dose of nourishing antioxidants. Free of harsh chemicals, medicines, and other hair and scalp drying agents, this cooling conditioner relieves flaking, itching, and irritation, offering relief and relaxation with pure essential oils of spearmint and eucalyptus.
*How to use: Daily (or as often as desired) Shampoo with Malibu C Scalp Wellness Shampoo. Follow with Malibu C Scalp Wellness Conditioner.

Moisturize your scalp!

One of the best ways to manage dandruff is by moisturizing your scalp. One way to do this is by using a hydrating oil, which can be rubbed into your head and gently massaged in. A good example of this type of product is coconut oil, as it's easily absorbed into both dry and oily scalps alike.

Another option is to use a hydrating cream or serum instead—these are applied in the same manner as oils but tend to have thicker consistencies that can be left on longer (up to an hour). However, they don't absorb quite as easily as oils. If you have particularly thick or curly hair, try using an all-in-one conditioner/moisturizer first before applying your regular styling products at night for maximum effect!

There are also many types of specialized dandruff treatments available online that combine multiple ingredients into one product; these may include essential oils like tea tree oil (a natural antiseptic), zinc pyrithione (an antifungal agent), salicylic acid (which helps prevent inflammation), jojoba seed oil (known for its anti-inflammatory properties) etcetera. These products may cost more than regular shampoo alone but they're effective enough that sometimes just one application per week will eliminate persistent flakes from ever returning again!

Try a natural oil treatment.

Apply a few drops of jojoba oil to your dry scalp. Massage the oil into your hair and scalp with your fingertips for about 5 minutes.

Cover your hair with a towel or shower cap and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. If you have time, leave it on overnight (I often do). You could also use a heat cap or sit under an infrared lamp if you want faster results—but these treatments can be pricey!

Rinse off with warm water, shampoo as usual, and condition if desired. Repeat every two weeks until the dandruff is gone completely!

Conclusion

With a little bit of extra work, you can get rid of dandruff. It's not always easy to manage but if you stay on top of it and keep up with your routine, you'll be on the way to having beautiful hair again!
