Choose your Sunscreen!
Choose your Sunscreen!
With the rising awareness about the damaging effects of the sun's rays on our skin, sunscreen has become an essential step in any skincare routine. While it's common knowledge that sunscreen helps protect our skin from sunburns and harmful UV rays, many people tend to overlook the significance of wearing it consistently throughout the year.

We often underestimate the strength of UV rays during cloudy days or winter months. They mistakenly think that sunscreen is only necessary when the sun is shining brightly. However, it's important to remember that even on overcast days, UV rays can still reach our skin and cause damage. So, incorporating sunscreen into our daily skincare routine is crucial no matter the weather conditions!

When it comes to keeping our skin safe from those pesky UV rays, sunscreen is like our trusty sidekick. But here's the thing - have you ever taken a moment to think about the ingredients in your sunscreen?

Let's be real, we're the ones in control of what we slather on our skin. You have the power to choose what products you will use to save your skin from those sneaky UV rays. That’s why we're here to know and uncover the ingredients and their potential trouble and understand why picking the right sunscreen is a big deal for your skin's health!

First up, we have the amazing duo: Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide.

  • The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, proposed that out of all the sunscreen ingredients out there, only two ingredients could be classified as safe and effective, based on the currently available information.

These powerhouses form an invisible shield on your skin, deflecting those pesky UV rays like a boss. It's like having your own personal bodyguard but for your face! So, if you're trying to find the safest sunscreen, look for mineral sunscreens.

  • Mineral sunscreens are like the cool kid on the block, perfect for everyone, including children, folks with sensitive skin, and those with melasma as they help to shield your skin from those pesky pigmentation issues and keep your skin looking as radiant as ever.
The only deal with mineral sunscreen is that: it can be a bit trickier to apply compared to chemical sunscreen. Why? Well, it leaves a white film on your skin, and you might need to reapply it more often. And for those of us with acne-prone skin, it can be a little thick and might contribute to breakouts. But hey, no worries! There are products out there that have anti-acne additives in their ingredients list so your skin won't be compromised.

Try EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 which contains niacinamide (vitamin B3), hyaluronic acid, and lactic acid that protects acne-prone and sensitive skin.

On the other hand, there we have chemical sunscreen which often provides more comprehensive protection against different types of UV rays.

  • This means they help to shield your skin more from those sneaky sunburns and the aging effects caused by UV rays. It is also easy and quick to apply and tends to be more resistant to water and sweat.

While it mainly works its magic on the outside of your skin, there's some solid evidence that certain ingredients in sunscreen can actually get absorbed into your body.

  • There are twelve other sunscreen ingredients that haven't gotten the all-clear yet. They're not considered "generally recognized as safe and effective" because there ain't enough data to say for sure. These ingredients are avobenzone, cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, padimate O, and sulisobenzone.

Studies have shown that these ingredients can be absorbed through the skin and raised some health concerns. That is why the FDA has asked for more safety data on these ingredients. But, lately, some studies have also suggested that three of these ingredients - homosalate, avobenzone, and oxybenzone - might mess with our endocrine system.

  • The European Commission, in 2021, dropped knowledge about three organic UV filters commonly found in sunscreens. According to their preliminary opinions, it seems that two of these filters - oxybenzone (organic sun filter that absorbs short UVA and UVB) and homosalate (specifically absorbs short-wave UVB rays) - might not be totally safe in the amounts we're using right now. So, they're proposing a limit on the concentrations allowed, like 2.2 percent for oxybenzone and 1.4 percent for homosalate. But the U.S Sunscreen manufacturers are still legally allowed to use high concentrations of up to 6 to 15% respectively.

Some studies have found traces of sunscreen ingredients in breast milk, urine, and even blood plasma samples. And we can get this - if we use sunscreen sprays, that might actually end up breathing in, and also by applying sunscreen to your lips, as we can ingest some of those ingredients too. That’s why it is extra important that the ingredients in the products we use are safe and not harmful to us.

When it comes to ingredients, knowledge is power. Read those labels, decode those fancy names, and arm yourself with the finest ammunition for your skin. Because hey, your face deserves only the very best, right? Now go forth, armed with your ingredient knowledge and a fabulous smile, and conquer the world with your radiant and ever-so-glowy skin. Remember, you're the curator of your skincare destiny, and the ingredients are your trusted sidekicks.

Stay fabulous, and stay adventurous.
