Behind The Brand: FACE atelier Cosmetics

Fact: H*ll hath no fury like a woman (or makeup artist!) whose favorite foundation has been discontinued or had its formula revised! Beyond using great skincare, the most important cosmetic product in a makeup bag or kit is FOUNDATION color match, consistency, versatility, quality, and suitability.

The rule of thumb: don't cut corners on your skincare or your foundation; if your skin doesn't look good ... no one's going to notice the $40 mascara, immaculately applied eyeliner, or anything else you're wearing. What did you do professionally before this venture; how did you end up here?
Prior to launching FACE atelier, I was married and working in the family home furnishings business. Before that, I'd spent 7 years in University getting degrees in Journalism, English Lit, and finally Law, and then getting admitted into the Bar Societies in Ontario and Alberta. FACE atelier is part of my post-divorce reinvention. I'd help my ex build a business that wasn't mine to keep, so once the dust settled, I decided to start my own. Makeup appealed to me, as even though I hadn't mastered its application, I knew that there was magic in the bottle! Post-separation, a makeup artist taught me how to apply it properly, and much to my amazement, I discovered that I couldnt find a foundation to match my dark olive skin. That got me thinking that there must be a lot of women with the same problem. Also, as the mother of two daughters, I knew that good self-esteem was the best accessory a girl could have, yet low self-esteem seemed pandemic among women of all ages. I believe that makeup is an important tool in a woman's tool box to help her look and feel better about herself. However, the beauty business seems to be more about marketing than performance, and the selection was dizzying. So I decided to create a carefully edited line of sophisticated yet versatile age and race neutral makeup that simply worked, and worked simply.

Tell us what makes your brand great!
Performance, performance, performance! FACE atelier emphasizes innovation over imitation, offering easy-to-use products driven by quality, performance, and originality. I intended FACE atelier to be the first consumer brand that was truly good enough for the pros, and thanks to iconic makeup artist Billy B falling in love with Ultra Foundation, it quickly garnered a cult following of makeup artists around the world. Today, FACE atelier can be found on the faces of top stars like Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert, and Lady Gaga; behind the scenes at TV shows and networks including Hannibal, The Golbergs, True Blood, ABC, CBS, MTV, and CNN, as well as in the makeup kits of top makeup artists worldwide. 

Who best benefits from your products?
Anyone looking for high-performing cosmetic products that perform without false promises, and actually do what they're supposed to do, which is help a woman put her best face forward. FACE atelier has over 15,000 pro makeup artists in its Preferred Pro Program, and they use FACE atelier because it makes their job easier, and their models look great.


Going into the future: what inspires you?
There's nothing more satisfying than when I'm told that FACE atelier has changed someone's life. It may come from a customer who's fallen in love with the products, and who feels 10 years younger when she's wearing FACE atelier. Or it could be a makeup artist who says that our products have changed the way they do makeup. It's about making a difference in peoples lives, regardless of how trivial it may seem.


What other brands and companies do you admire? Why?
I don't run my business looking over my shoulder at what other cosmetic companies are doing. I'm extremely focused on keeping FACE atelier growing in the right direction, concentrating on developing new products that fit within our mandate: innovative, high-performing, easy-to-use, that both consumers and pros fall in love with, and can't live without. I'm interested only in what works, not what's trending.
