It’s no secret that exfoliating is essential for healthy skin—but the real question is, how should you exfoliate, and which products are right for you?

To find the best approach for your routine, let’s first explore the two main types of exfoliants and how each works to reveal smoother, more radiant skin.

Chemical Exfoliation
This method removes dead skin cells without physical scrubbing. It uses active ingredients like enzymes and acids (AHA and BHA) to gently dissolve buildup. MYTH: Chemical exfoliation is harsh on the skin. TRUTH: According to Dr. Lim Ing Kien, chemical exfoliation is safer, doesn't cause microtears, and exfoliates more evenly compared to mechanical skin exfoliants done at home (not by a professional).


Mechanical Exfoliation
This type of exfoliation involves using scrubs or physical tools to manually remove dead skin cells. Common examples include loofahs, brushes, and scrubs made with coffee, sugar, or salt—each helping to polish the skin’s surface for a smoother texture. 		Mechanical exfoliation skincare concept

 

TIPS for proper mechanical exfoliation at home:

1. Frequency Not all exfoliants should be used daily or even weekly. Often exfoliating brushes need only be used monthly, to avoid micro tears that can reduce our skin's effectiveness to protect our body from external aggressors.

2. Pressure Evenly apply pressure/application throughout the skin. When using mechanical exfoliants, we might tend to scrub harder on select parts of our skin that we feel need more exfoliation than others. But to be safe, it's best to exfoliate gently and evenly throughout the skin.

The best way to go is to visit your dermatology/spa clinic to leave it to professionals to mechanically exfoliate your skin properly using the right tools. But if you feel like winging it at home, just make sure to exfoliate at a moderate pace and scrub your skin gently and evenly.
