The Difference Between Hydration and Moisturization

Posted By Diane
When it comes to the beauty industry, there are a lot of terms and differences that need to be learned. For example, the difference between hydration and moisturization. Most skincare consumers thought that hydrating and moisturizing their skin is the same but in reality, these two routines are really different from each other. Although hydration and moisturization both work to ensure that our skin receives enough moisture, their difference still lies mostly on how they go through the skin and achieving a specific result. Here, we will help you understand how hydration differs from moisturization and what your skin might be needing the most.

Hydration
This refers to hydrate which is a substance that contains water. Aside from keeping your body hydrated through refreshments by drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day, your skin must also be kept hydrated in order for it to defend your body against harmful UV radiation, micro-organisms, and environmental stressors. To put it simply, hydrating is about binding water to the skin using humectants which absorb water from the air and retain moisture into the layers of the skin.

Signs of Dehydrated Skin
Compared to dry skin, dehydration can cause dullness. So, if you noticed that your skin looks dull, it is simply dehydrated which means it is lacking water and therefore needs hydration. Another sign is when dark circles start appearing under your eyes. Some also experience itchiness and irritations due to an increase in sensitivity. The skin also becomes flaky which often appears blotchy or red due to lack of hydration.

How to hydrate
No matter what your skin type is, you can simply hydrate your skin with the help of hydrators in the form of serums, facial oil, water gel and more. We recommend applying a serum enriched with Hyaluronic Acid for its multiple benefits such as intense hydration and skin cell regeneration.

Moisturization
On the other hand, moisturizing is about locking in moisture into the skin while creating a skin barrier protection at the same time. No matter in what season you are in, you should always moisturize your skin in order to reinforce its natural lipid barrier to protect itself from damage and loss of water.

Signs of Dry Skin
Aside from being classified as a skin type, Dry Skin is also a common skin problem of many, especially during winter. If your skin feels tight and rough after bathing or showering, chances are your skin is already considered as dry. When the skin dryness becomes worse, cracks and fine lines may evolve and look more visible. Dry skin also causes itchiness which soon leads to inflammation if scratching becomes inevitable.

How to moisturize
Choosing the right moisturizer for your skin is the first thing to do. Its either you prefer a lightweight one or a double-duty formula to maximize its benefits all day long. When it comes to moisturizers, opt for creams or lotions which contain natural oils such as antioxidants, cocoa or shea butter, and beeswax to lock in and retain moisture at the same time. Most moisturizers being offered now, are also packed with added SPF for maximum sun protection.
